District heating: a new form of diversification

District heating: a new form of diversification and One-Stop Shop

Van den Berg was selected by the Belgian government Buildings Agency (Régie des Bâtiments/Regie der Gebouwen) and Bruxelles-Energie to connect the castle and the greenhouses of Laeken to the district heating network that is supplied with energy from the waste incinerator in Neder-over-Heembeek. The aim is to reduce the domain’s ecological footprint and to push down the high heating costs.

Household waste incinerator as a district heating installation

Since 2016, the Neder-over-Heembeek household waste incinerator has served as a local district heating installation that distributes the residual heat from waste incineration. As the Royal Domain is close to the incinerator and consumes a lot of energy every year, the Buildings Agency decided to connect the domain to the district heating network.

Design & Build delivery stations

Van den Berg is tasked with designing and building the delivery stations and the internal piping from the heating network to the substations. It will also install and start up the substations and heat exchangers. These substations will provide the Royal Domain with heating.

One-Stop Shop

In carrying out this project, Van den Berg worked together with ComTIS and BESIX Water & Environment. ComTIS is responsible for the installation of the internal pipelines and the 15 years of preventive maintenance. BESIX Water & Environment is assisting Van den Berg with the technical study and the automation for the realisation of the delivery stations. The partnership demonstrates BESIX strength in being able to leverage all the expertise within the group to provide integrated solutions spanning the entire value chain.
