Project Antwerp, Belgium

Liefkenshoek railway tunnel

The Liefkenshoek railway tunnel is a tunnel owned by the Belgian railway operator Infrabel for freight transport in the port of Antwerp. The tunnel connects Antwerp’s left bank in the territory of the municipality of Beveren with the right bank of the port of Antwerp in the Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo district. Van den Berg took charge of designing and installing the safety systems in this tunnel.

Project description

The project consisted of designing and developing the safety systems for the tunnel. This included installing fire detection and gas extinguishing systems, a radio network with steel cable and a PLC-controlled general safety system. The project also involved cabling the access control and installing a BMS visualisation package.

Maintenance

Structural maintenance is vital for ensuring the proper functioning of all systems. This task is also being performed by Van den Berg for a 15-year period.

Strong player

The Liefkenshoek rail link ICT project demonstrates Van den Berg's capacity to carry out a major project within a very short time frame.
