As a subcontractor to General Cable, Van den Berg plays a decisive role in the underground direct-current installation. Van den Berg is installing the entire 49 kilometre stretch of cables on Belgian soil, including tunnelling under the Albert Canal and the Maas. It is working with Jan de Nul and K-Boringen on the 670-metre-long tunnel. The total underground electricity interconnection is to be around one hundred kilometres long. In this project, Van den Berg is implementing 35 horizontal directional drillings (HDD) ranging between 70 and 450 metres in length, many of which will be drilled through rock. For the cabling, 94 reels with an average weight of 40 tonnes will be used. In addition, 40,000 tonnes of dolomite will be processed over the whole of the project. Van den Berg strives for excellence and zero accidents. Currently, more than 80,000 hours have been worked at ALEGrO with no time lost due to work accidents.
